Overview
South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, located in eastern Zambia and famous for its high concentration of wildlife, walking safaris, and unspoiled natural beauty along the Luangwa River.
Info
The park is centered around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons, which attract large populations of wildlife year-round. It is especially known for excellent sightings of leopards, lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and endemic species like Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest.
South Luangwa is considered the birthplace of walking safaris, offering guided bush walks for a more immersive wildlife experience, in addition to classic game drives and night drives.
Birdlife is also exceptional, with over 400 species recorded, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
The best time to visit is the dry season (June to October), when animals gather around water sources, offering outstanding game viewing. The green season brings lush landscapes and dramatic scenery.
Accommodation ranges from luxury safari lodges to intimate bush camps, with well-known options like Mfuwe Lodge providing close access to wildlife and park activities.
